Within the first week he has already managed to teach me something valuable.
We’re staying at a hotel in Paris, KY with a couple of my best friends.
The beds are pretty exceptionally tall and he is a small on the very edge of becoming a medium dog 20lb Chiweenie, so short legs.
I was laying on the bed, and of course he wanted up onto it. I didn’t think could make it and I told him not to do it because he could hurt himself.
He would not make it and fall or he might hurt his back I thought. Since he’s part Dachshund I’m sort of worried about the back problems they have. Last night when I went to talk to them a couple ladies outside my hotel in Nashville asked to pet him and we had a lovely conversation. They told be about their goats and chickens and dogs, true story. One also told me how her husband got shot in the neck, but it’s ok, he saw the person drawing their gun and turned his body to make him a smaller target.
Anyway, the point is, she also has a Dachshund and has a few dogs. She reminded me that pure breeds do tend to have problems, but usually combo/mutt dogs have the combinations fix their things. That made me feel better.
Double anyway, I still thought it wasn’t good for him to jump onto the bed, and told him so, but of course, he doesn’t know English yet, so he tried anyway, and of course, fell.
I picked him up onto the bed since he wanted up, he hung out, but he’s got puppy ADD and got down.
A little while later, the dude wanted up again, I told him not to jump, he’d probably fall again. Well, he still hasn’t learned English within that 30min and he tried to jump anyway… LO AND BEHOLD HE MADE IT!!
I couldn’t believe it, my friends couldn’t believe it, it was a very tall bed!! But he did it, and for the rest of the night he jumped up on the first try no problem!
I was very proud, mostly because in that experience my dog taught ME something. Within one week my 8mo puppy was teaching me about life, I know he’ll continue to do so as he grows up and we proceed through the journey that is life together.
Bacon, my dog, knew what he wanted. He was optimistic in himself even though I wasn’t. Bacon has a very distinct personality, as most dogs do, but his personality is more unique in that I feel many other small dogs would have been deterred from jumping after their first fall.
He didn’t let the fall get to them, could have and just started whining till somebody picked him up but instead he knew what he wanted and tried again.
I’ve got to be like Bacon. Sometimes I’m quick to see something and jump to the conclusion that it’s not possible, though I am not usually one to think something is impossible, sometimes you just can’t help it.
Thank goodness he hasn’t learned English yet, or I may have convinced him otherwise. He knew what he wanted, believed in himself, went after what he wanted till he got it, even when it didn’t initially work out.
My 8mo dog taught me a valuable life lesson within the first week of having him. I can’t wait to see what he helps me to learn next!!
Wishing you all the best,
FCP 🙃

P.S. This isn’t really a P.S. since I’m including it within the initial posting of it (I wrote this and had to leave it as a daft till I was able to publish it. But I brought Bacon home to NYC and was very nervous about him going up and down the NYC stairs, in fact again I thought he wouldn’t be able to do it! At first this was the case and I’d have to carry him up and down the stairs every time, but then lo and behold after 2 days he’s already doing up AND down on his own!!! I’m never doubting this dog again, he can do almost anything!!
